Bulls fire coach Tom Thibodeau

Tom Thibodeau
The Bulls fired coach Tom Thibodeau on Thursday despite two years and roughly $9 million remaining on his deal, with general manager Gar Forman citing a need for "a culture of communication that builds a trust throughout this organization."
A telling moment during an afternoon “Goodbye, Thibs” news conference at the United Center came when Bulls vice president of basketball operations John Paxson summarized the reasoning behind Thibodeau’s dismissal as Forman, sitting to his left, nodded in agreement.
“You have to have a situation where you are all pulling in the same direction,” Paxson said. “Once that stops, it’s very difficult to move forward.”
Seconds later, Paxson added: “We probably wouldn’t be sitting here if we won a championship” – a nod to the realities of pro sports: No matter how difficult a player or coach is to work with, winning cures all.But the Bulls didn’t win in the postseason under Thibodeau, who was removed Thursday after five seasons. The team’s performance in the second-round loss to the Cavaliers was particularly galling, given that Cleveland played without Kevin Love and with a hobbled Kyrie Irving.
"We were all really disappointed in the way the season ended," Paxson said. "Cleveland is a great team and they're in the Finals. But we felt like, given their injuries, the path was there for us if we could have seized it."
Forman said that Bulls management “dug deep” before coming to a decision Wednesday night and informing Thibodeau on Thursday morning.
They considered the team’s overall performance, exit interviews with players, Thibodeau’s reluctance to adhere to minutes restrictions and, perhaps most significantly, the coach’s personality, which turned off numerous facets of the organization.

Yankees retire Bernie Williams' No. 51, unveil Monument Park plaque

NEW YORK -- The Yankees honored Bernie Williams prior to Sunday night's 5-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, officially retiring his No. 51 and unveiling his plaque that will reside in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.
Williams was a key contributor as the Yankees' center fielder for World Series-winning teams in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000, and many of his former teammates were on hand for the ceremony, including Derek Jeter.
It was Jeter's first appearance at Yankee Stadium since he retired at the end of last season.Other former teammates present included Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, Paul O'Neill,Tino Martinez and David Cone, along with former manager Joe Torre. All of them received thunderous applause from the crowd.
"This is unbelievable," Williams said, beginning his remarks to the crowd. "Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that a skinny little 17-year-old kid from Puerto Rico could be here this day, in this celebration. I am overwhelmed."
Williams spent his entire 16-year career with the Yankees, beginning in 1991. He made five American League All-Star teams, won four Gold Gloves, has the most postseason RBIs in MLB history (80) and the second-most postseason home runs (22). He played his final season in 2006, but did not officially retire until last month.

Sloane Stephens, 22, beats Venus Williams, 34, in first round

PARIS -- For the second time in three years, Venus Williams has lost in the first round at the French Open.
Venus, who was beaten by younger sister Serena in the 2002 final, lost 7-6 (5), 6-1 to the 40th-ranked Sloane Stephens, a 22-year-old up-and coming American player.
Stephens, who beat Serena at the 2013 Australian Open, made it to the fourth round in Paris each of the past three years. At 34, Venus was the oldest player in the draw.
Williams declined to speak to the media after her first-round exit at the French Open.
She is facing a potential fine for skipping the traditional news conference, although she issued a statement in which she said Stephens "just played better than me today.''
Williams added she will now turn her focus to the grass-court season.
"I have a little while now between tournaments and so now I'll just get ready for the grass at Wimbledon,'' she said.

Raiders owner Mark Davis still considers Oakland top option

Raiders owner Mark Davis still considers Oakland top option
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Raiders owner Mark Davis walked into a makeshift Black Hole outside The Ritz-Carlton joining a throng of protesters, and vowed to do all he can to keep his team in Oakland. Even as he and Chargers owner Dean Spanos moved ahead on plans for a stadium project in Southern California.
Davis said he will know by June 21 from the City of Oakland and Alameda County about a possible preliminary financing plan for $400 million to build a new stadium in the East Bay he said would cost $900 million. He has $500 million committed.
Davis signed ''Stay in Oakland'' posters in the middle of approximately 30 protesters who only moments earlier were chanting, ''Stay in Oakland! Oakland Raiders!'' They then changed their cheer to ''Thank you, Mark!''''What's up, guys? Hey, listen, you guys are the best,'' Davis told the crowd. ''I'm trying all I can do to keep this team in Oakland, OK? I don't know what to do, I really don't know. We're trying. I'm not trying to divide any fan base. Every time I talk to anybody, I'm trying to stay in Oakland. That's my No. 1 choice, but we can't do this forever. I really appreciate you all, I really do.''

There Must be something in the water in Philadelphia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can certainly be argued that Philadelphia sports fans get a bad rap. Yes, we know they booed Santa Claus. We heard you the 500th time. But are they really that much ruder and cruder than the rabid fans from other large metropolitan areas?
If your answer to that question is "uh, yes," then this is your lucky day. Because we have fresh new evidence -- yes, Philly, we know it's just one mean man! -- that might finally get you to stop referencing the booing-Santa thing.
On Sunday, during an otherwise harmless Diamondbacks-Phillies game, Philadelphia's Maikel Franco hit his first career home run and a 63-year-old, glove-wearing fan named Joyce Murphy Kiner was in prime position to grab the souvenir.Until she wasn't. Until she was bumped out of that position by a grown man wearing a jersey.

Northwestern AD Jim Phillips decries one-and-done culture

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips, chair of the new Division I council, voiced his opposition Tuesday to the one-and-done culture in college basketball, joining powerful voices that include NCAA president Mark Emmert and Kentucky coach John Calipari.
One-and-done play is symptomatic of the problems that plague college athletics, Phillips said at the Big Ten spring meetings, in that it does not benefit the student-athlete at large.
"Frankly speaking," Phillips said, "shame on us. We've allowed the National Basketball Association to dictate what our rules are, or influence what our rules are at the collegiate level."
Phillips said NBA executives "look at us as the minor leagues."
"Nobody feels great about kids going to school for a semester and then leaving," he said. "That's crazy. It's absurd. So we've got to fix it.
"Why have we accepted that? Why have we just allowed that to happen without any pushback?"
Emmert and Calipari spoke against one-and-done play last year at the Final Four.
The rule that led to the trend was put in place in 2005 as part of a minimum-age requirement in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. The CBA expires in 2021, though the league or the union may opt out in 2017 -- possibly presenting a chance to renegotiate the age requirement in two years.
In addition to his comments on basketball, Phillips said Tuesday that the structure of college athletics needs a full review and an overhaul in areas.
"We've gotten to the point where it is time for a timeout," Phillips said, "and everything should be on the table. Nothing's sacred. Let's do the right thing for our student-athletes."
Phillips was elected this year to lead the council, which is tasked to run the day-to-day business of the NCAA's largest classification of 345 schools.

Bump that! Ariza's dustup with Curry a thing of past

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rockets forward Trevor Ariza remembers the bump a little differently.
“I didn’t bump into him,” Ariza said Tuesday morning. “I was running and he just turned into me. That was it.”
On Jan. 21, during the Golden State Warriors' 126-113 win over the Houston Rockets, Ariza ran upcourt after a change of possession and nudged Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. Curry took exception and charged Ariza but was restrained by teammate Draymond Green. Ariza was given a technical and, later, a $2,500 fine.
At the time, Curry told reporters he thought it was a “cheap shot,” and later said, “If that’s how they want to try to get back in the game, it didn’t work. We answered that physicality by just playing our brand of basketball.”
The Warriors and Rockets played a chippy game that saw five technical fouls called, including one on Curry.
After the game, James Harden, the Rockets' leading scorer, told the Associated Press, “They bullied us tonight. They smacked us four times.”
Several Warriors players were upset at Harden for a comment he made before the previous regular-season meeting. In a pregame team huddle, Harden told his team that the Warriors “ain’t even that good.” It was supposed to be a private moment, but unbeknownst to Rockets players, a cameraman was filming them in the tunnel.
All of this perceived bad blood seems to be gone now as the two best teams in the West meet in the conference finals.
“That was during the season, a long time ago,” Ariza said after the Rockets' shootaround on Tuesday. “Our goals are totally different; we’re in a different place [and] we’re trying to beat them. We’re not trying to be friends with them or anything, we’re trying to come in here and get some wins.”
It’s been three months since these teams las“It’s the postseason, so I don’t think at this point none of the teams are going to be playing passive,” Rockets forward Josh Smith said. “It’s time to lace the shoes up, tighten your shorts up a little higher, and get after it a little bit. I expect the players dictating these games. As deep as the postseason is right now, I look forward to a very competitive series.”t faced off, but a physical series is still expected.

Kyle Busch to return to car this weekend in All-Star race

Kyle Busch to return to car this weekend in All-Star race
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Less than three months after suffering serious injuries when he crashed into a concrete wall at Daytona, Kyle Busch will return to racing in NASCAR's All-Star race this weekend following a rapid recovery his doctors called remarkable.
Busch will run in Saturday night's event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He has been sidelined since a Feb. 21 crash in the Xfinity Series opener in which he broke his right leg and left foot in an accident that spurred safety reviews throughout NASCAR.
''I don't know that anybody would have expected the All-Star Race would have been a place for me to come back when we were laying down in the hospital bed in Daytona and even in Charlotte just days after the accident,'' Busch said Tuesday, noting that specialist Dr. Robert Anderson of OrthoCarolina was surprised at the fast recovery.

Canadiens confident they can force Game 7 against Lightning

Canadiens confident they can force Game 7 against Lightning
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Hold the pep talks, motivational ploys and all the statistics that support Tampa Bay feeling good about its chances of closing out Montreal in the second round of the NHL playoff.
The resilient Canadiens have won two straight to trim a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series. And the suddenly reeling Lightning said it is time to match the opposition's desperation and finish the job.
Game 6 is tonight at Amalie Arena, where Tampa Bay compiled the league's best home record during the regular season. Game 7, if necessary, would be played in Montreal on Thursday.
''We just have to have the belief that if we play the way we know we can that we're going to win,'' Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said after practice Monday.

Berra celebrates 90th with return of rings, trophies

Berra celebrates 90th with return of rings, trophies
LITTLE FALLS, N.J. (AP) -- As Yogi Berra might say, when you turn 90 you should celebrate it right the first time.
The baseball Hall of Famer enjoyed his 90th birthday in grand style Tuesday, complete with a youth drum orchestra, a giant cake - and replicas of his 10 World Series rings and three AL MVP awards that were stolen last year.
Berra, who is bound to a wheelchair, cut a ribbon but did not speak. Surrounded by family members, he smiled for cameras.
''It's obviously a wonderful day,'' said Dale Berra, Yogi's son and the former major league infielder. ''It's all about the way my dad carried himself all the time, with dignity, with respect of people. Not just opponents, but teachers, leaders. ... My dad respected all people. He just happened to be a great baseball player.''

Report: Bulls management anxious to fire Tom Thibodeau

Despite his impressive run of success in Chicago, the relationship between Tom Thibodeau and the Bulls front office reportedly is unfixable.
With a healthy Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls look like a team that is poised to make a run at a championship. Even if they do, their head coach could very well be headed elsewhere this summer.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Bulls management “can’t wait to rid itself” of Tom Thibodeau. It hasn’t mattered that Thibodeau has taken the Bulls to the playoffs each season he has been running the show and consistently kept his team in contention without Rose. The relationship between head coach and front office was described as “beyond repair” earlier this season, and winning appears to have done nothing to remedy the situation.
“Ahhhh, that’s all noise,” Thibodeau said after Monday night’s win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Bulls have long taken issue with the way Thibodeau rotates players, but he doesn’t seem to care. Why should he? His Bulls have always been one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference when healthy, though some would argue that they’re rarely healthy because Thibs refuses to give players rest.
Chicago could easily oust LeBron James and company with the Cavaliers missing Kevin Love and the Bulls already having taken a 1-0 series lead. If they do that, there’s no reason they can’t beat the winner of the Wizards-Hawks series. Can the Bulls really fire their coach if he reaches the NBA Finals? We know a certain guy in Miami who survived the same type of chatter, so Thibodeau isn’t toast just yet. Having said that, he clearly has one foot out the door. Bulls fans are hoping the team uses that as motivation to rally around him.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Stephen Curry is the 2014-15 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player. #KiaMVP

Stephen Curry had an awesome year, helping the Golden State Warriors win the top seed in the west and the best record in the NBA. Just edging out James Harden and Russell Westbrook both who had remarkable year. I also think we could throw Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol in the mix.
