It's been three weeks since Roberta Vinci made her name by beating Serena Williams at the U.S. Open and crushed the hearts of Black America. Fans wept, ticket prices plummeted, and Williams had to wait until next year for that Grand Slam.
But today was the day Vinci received her comeuppance. Serena sat out the
Wuhan Open to heal injuries, so the win had to come from none other than her big sis Venus. She was on point after dropping the first set and took down Vinci: 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
The match doesn't come without some drama. Vinci yelled, "What the fuck?" because she didn't like how long Venus took to get ready in between serves.
"Excuse me?" Venus said in a don't-be-mad-because-you're-getting-this-work tone. Venus clinched the point right after, winning both the match and the pettiest handshake ever from Vinci.
Venus was unbothered about Vinci's lame handshake since she still had to take that L anyway. However, she did dedicate the win to her sister."If I could, I'd give my win to Serena at the U.S. Open," Venus said. "Unfortunately it doesn't work like that."
