Giancarlo Stanton not flinching from task of resurrecting Marlins

Giancarlo Stanton walks to the dugout after striking out on Tuesday. (USAT)
JUPITER, Fla. – The whole idea is to bury the doubt. Or face it. One of the two. Really it was up to Giancarlo Stanton. Bottom line, a man can’t flinch. No matter how bad his head says, “Run! Duck! Get out! Don’t be a fool!”Flinch once, he’d invite a lifetime of abuse. Flinch once and they’d win, maybe forever. They’d bring the fearless fastballs. They’d start the curveballs ear-high. It’s no way to spend a career, a life – not trusting them, not trusting yourself.

Stanton took a breath, willed himself to stand in there and, yes, in spite of hard memories and jellied legs and a good amount of spilled blood, survived those contract negotiations with the Miami Marlins.
