UFC on FOX 14 Official TV Ratings Highest Since January of 2014

January continues to be a strong month for UFC events on FOX, as the recent Gustafsson vs. Johnson event drew the networks largest UFC audience since UFC on FOX 10 on Jan. 25 of last year.Saturday’s UFC on FOX 14 drew an audience of 3.049 million, which was slightly lower that UFC on FOX 10’s 3.2 million, but topped all of the promotion’s other “Big FOX” events throughout 2014, according to Nielsen tracking numbers.
The UFC on FOX 14 telecast peaked at 3.646 million viewers during the Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Johnson main event.
Johnson derailed the Swede on his home turf, not only winning the fight by TKOing him, but also taking his title shot. Johnson will now be the next challenge for troubled UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Ronaldo handed two-match ban for kicking opponent

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo reacts after their King's Cup round of 16 second leg soccer match in Madrid
(Reuters) - Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a two-match ban following his dismissal for kicking out at an opponent during their La Liga clash with Cordoba last Saturday, the Spanish league said on Wednesday.Ronaldo was unable to make an impact in the match and his frustration saw him first lash out with his hand at Jose Crespo, which the referee missed, and then minutes later kick out at Edimar for which he was sent off.

Tony Stewart acquires national sprint car series tour

Tony Stewart acquires national sprint car series tour
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Tony Stewart won't be back in a sprint car, by his own estimation, for ''a very, very long time.''
But the three-time NASCAR champion can't bear to be away from the grass-roots level of racing, and he has added another piece to his growing portfolio by acquiring the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series - one of the oldest, traveling sprint car organizations in the country.
''My passion for sprint car racing is well known, and the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series has been a pillar of the sport for a long time,'' Stewart said Wednesday. ''Racing is my business, and I look forward to building on the All Star Series' already impressive legacy by taking it to a new level of success and sustainability.''
Stewart's latest acquisition is the first racing series he owns outright. Stewart also owns Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, and fields two World of Outlaws cars out of Tony Stewart Racing. He also is co-owner of NASCAR's four-team Stewart-Haas Racing, which won the Sprint Cup title last season with Kevin Harvick.

Woods returns to Phoenix with plenty of memories

Woods returns to Phoenix with plenty of memories
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Tiger Woods returned to the Phoenix Open and received cheers, boos and gasps.
All on one hole.
There is rarely a dull moment with golf's biggest star, especially at the PGA Tour's rowdiest venue. Even though Woods has played at TPC Scottsdale only three times, what defines his experience at the Phoenix Open is not a trophy, rather it's some beer, a boulder, an orange and a gun.
So a typical pro-am Wednesday was anything but that - especially at the par-3 16th hole.Woods managed to deliver another memory. His 9-iron was just left of the pin when it turned enough left that it tumbled into a bunker. The cheers turned to boos, and Woods tugged the bill of his cap in mock shame. Seconds later, the cheers returned from the full house.

Patrick Roy chimes in on Martin Brodeur retirement

Chicago Blackhawks v Colorado Avalanche
NASHVILLE – There has always  been symmetry between Colorado coach/HOF goaltender Patrick Roy and former New Jersey/St. Louis goaltender Martin Brodeur. The records, the style of play, the French Canadian bravado all come into mind.
But when Roy retired after the 2002-03 season at the age of 37 it was a shock. He had a 2.18 goals against average and .920 save percentage. Sure, his body was breaking down, but he was still effective.
With Brodeur, at the age of 42 and failing stats – it wasn’t a surprise at all. What is odd is that Brodeur has taken a job with the St. Louis Blues front office and not with his long-time team, the Devils (we'll get to that in a second).
Roy had a messy split with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1995-96 season and was traded to Colorado but eventually had his jersey retired by Montreal. Brodeur has taken subtle digs at the Devils since he signed with St. Louis. Are there any parallels?

Teammates on Grizzlies' D-League affiliate brawl on bench during timeout

Sure, longtime theoretical opponents Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao chatting at Tuesday's Miami Heat-Milwaukee Bucks game is a pretty big deal, I guess. But if you really want to see a fight, you should've been watching the D-League contest between the Iowa Energy and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. That's where the real scrapping went down — between two members of the same team. Here's a from-the-opposing-sideline view of Jarnell Stokes and Kalin Lucas — teammates on the Energy, the Memphis Grizzlies' D-League affiliate — going after one another on the bench during a timeout on Tuesday night:And here's a closer look, which offers a better indication of just how heated things got than a vantage point that had me focusing more on the late-reacting officials and the meandering mascot:

Alex Rodriguez has important allies in fight with Yankees over bonus

So at least somebody is on Alex Rodriguez’s side.
The Major League Baseball Players Association would take up his case should the New York Yankees choose not to pay him a $6 million bonus he’s owed for tying Willie Mays for No. 4 on the all-time home run list, the New York Post reported.

The Yankees reportedly would argue that they won’t receive a marketing benefit if A-Rod hits six more homers and reaches 660 for his career because of Rodriguez’s association with performance-enhancing drugs, which led to his season-long suspension last year. The players association would disagree.

“The union would challenge any breach of contract with the union,” a source close to the MLBPA told the Post. “A player can’t be punished again for something he’s already been punished for.”

And Rodriguez apparently won’t be punished for how he sued the players association last year, claiming that the MLBPA wasn’t putting out sufficient efforts on his behalf when he was fighting the Biogenesis-related suspension.

School co-founded by Deion Sanders in danger of closing

Deion Sanders is considered one of the best defensive backs in NFL history. A 2011 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, "Prime Time" was also an eight-time Pro Bowler. But the success Sanders had on the field unfortunately hasn't translated to the charter school he co-founded in 2012. According to The Dallas Morning News, Prime Time Prep is in danger of losing its charter. From the report:
Yikes. That doesn't sound good. The institution has had a tumultuous existence in its short run. Sanders was fired — then rehired the next day — after choking the school's chief financial officer. Just last year, Prime Prep lost its eligibility to be part of the National School Lunch Program.
In a Facebook status posted to his page Monday, it appeared Sanders had thrown in the towel.

UFC fines Jon Jones $25,000 for code of conduct violation

Jon Jones rehab
The UFC announced Saturday in a brief statement that it has fined light heavyweight champion Jon Jones $25,000 for his failed out-of-competition drug test on Dec. 4. The promotion also announced it had been assured by the Nevada Athletic Commission that Jones had passed all of his post-fight drug tests.
Jones defeated Daniel Cormier on Jan. 3 in the main event of UFC 182 at the MGM Grand Garden to retain his championship.

Manchester City 0-2 Arsenal: Gunners win big on the road with tactical masterclass

Manchester City v Arsenal
It’s been four years. Four long years.
That’s how long it’s been since Arsenal won a game on the road against an eventual top-four finisher. They’ve likely broken that trend, thanks to some brilliant tactical game-planning by Arsene Wenger.

Robert Allenby claims he was drugged, beaten and robbed in Waikiki

Robert Allenby took a picture of injuries he claims were sustained in a robbery on Jan. 16, 2015 in Hawaii.
Australian golfer Robert Allenby claims he was drugged, beaten and robbed on Friday night before being thrown in the trunk of a car and dumped out in a park some 6 miles from a Waikiki wine bar.
Allenby, who missed the cut earlier in the day at the Sony Open in Hawaii, was out on Friday night with his caddie Mick Middlemo and friend Anthony Puntoriero. After dinner, the trio traveled to Amuse Wine Bar. After some drinks at Amuse, Middlemo left for another establishment, expecting Allenby and Puntoriero to follow, according to Middlemo's account to Wei Under Par. Puntoriero then left Allenby briefly -- perhaps to go to the bathroom -- and returned unable to find the 43-year-old.

After a while, it felt as though the Detroit Red Wings were just showing off.Henrik Zetterberg scored from behind the goal line in the second, and Tomas Tatar batted a pass out of midair and into the net later that period, helping Detroit snap Nashville's five-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory over the Predators on Saturday night.

Cubs: New Wrigley Field bleachers won't be ready for opener

Cubs: New Wrigley Field bleachers won't be ready for opener
The Chicago Cubs say new Wrigley Field bleachers won't be ready for the April 5 season opener.
The left- and right-field bleachers are being replaced as part of a five-year overhaul of the ballpark that turned 100 last season.
President of Business Operations Crane Kenney said Saturday that the left-field bleachers won't be ready until early May, and the right-field ones in late May.
About 1,000 season-ticket holders can choose to get a full refund for games before May 11, a credit or relocate to the grandstand.
The team also said the left-field videoboard should be ready by April 5, but the smaller one in right will be operational in May.
Meanwhile, chairman Tom Ricketts confirmed the Cubs bought several neighboring buildings and plan to run them as rooftop businesses.

Stephon Marbury on his lost summer of 2009: 'I wanted to kill myself some days'

SM118115.jpg
Even with the knowledge that Stephon Marbury has turned his professional and personal life around in the years since, the clips of him crying and shouting and eventually eating Vaseline on a live internet video stream are as hard to watch now as they were back in 2009. Marbury, who had essentially been punted out of the NBA at the relatively young age of 31 after playing just 47 games in the two seasons prior, was creating a low point for us all to watch for free in the comfort of our own homes; spending the bulk of the summer of 2009 broadcasting a life that was spiraling out of control. In the nascent days of Twitter, some people did get their jokes in as Marbury melted down, but to many it came off as more frightening than entertaining.

Alexander Gustafsson unable to escape Jon Jones talk before 'Rumble' bout

Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson
LOS ANGELES — Everywhere Alexander Gustafsson turns, it seems, someone asks him about Jon Jones.
"That's all anyone wants to talk about," the top light heavyweight contender said. "Everywhere I go, reporters, fans, they all ask me about him."
He doesn't want it to be this way, mind you. The fighter from Sweden, who trains at San Diego's Alliance MMA, has a major challenge on his hands next week. He'll return home to Stockholm to meet dangerous striker Anthony "Rumble" Johnson in front of an expected crowd of 30,000 on Jan. 24.
But all anyone wants to discuss is the UFC light heavyweight champion, the man whom Gustafsson nearly defeated in 2013. The man he'll likely rematch if he defeats Johnson. The man who can't keep himself out of the news.

Messi's uncertain future, potential $600M cost to a buyer

Lionel Messi left FIFA's awards ceremony without a personal accolade again. Collecting a copy of FIFA's weekly magazine on the way out might have been worthwhile if he really needs to convince Barcelona of his ongoing value.
Flick through to Sepp Blatter's musing, and the FIFA president declares: "Barcelona would scarcely have become the gold standard in European football without Lionel Messi's 400 goals."Such an ego-boost will hardly make up for seeing Cristiano Ronaldo collect the Ballon D'Or for the second successive year. With commercial strategies now as scrutinized as the coach's tactics in football, the perception is that Real Madrid was more active lobbying for Ronaldo than Barcelona was for its four-time Ballon D'Or winner.

Ex-girlfriend: NASCAR's Busch took assassin claims from script

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kurt Busch speaks to members of his crew next to his number 51 car in the garage area in Daytona Beach
(Reuters) - A woman seeking a protective order against Kurt Busch on Wednesday rejected claims by the NASCAR champion that she is an assassin and said several of the race car driver's stories about her were taken from a movie screenplay she is writing.
Busch, testifying on a protective order against him in a Delaware court on Tuesday, said his ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll is an assassin sent on covert missions who once returned to their hotel room in a blood-splattered evening gown.
"Over the past seven years I have worked on a movie script with producers about a female CIA operative and her work on classified missions for the U.S," Driscoll said in a statement."Mr. Busch has seen and given commentary to me on the latest script because some of the stories he told on the stand are straight from the script."
Busch's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, refuted Driscoll's statement saying she has declared to many people -- not only Busch -- that she is a hired killer and the script was written from what she had been telling people for years about her personal life.
"It's not that Kurt got his story from the script, it's actually the opposite," Hardin told Reuters. "She comes up with a script that matches the story she had been telling people.

Phil Mickelson skipping Pebble Beach for first time since 1995

Golf begins a new year with 5 events to keep an eagle …
Phil Mickelson is skipping a pair of West Coast Swing staples to spend time with his family.
Mickelson announced on his website that he won't play in either the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am or the Northern Trust Open. Mickelson had played the old Clambake each year since 1995 and is a four-time winner of the event, including in a 2012 showdown with Tiger Woods. Lefty also has posted an excellent record in the last decade at NTO host Riviera Country Club, where he has a win and a pair of runner-up finishes in that span.“Those are two of my favorite events, two of my favorite courses,” he said on his website, “but with the kids in two schools with different spring breaks, I’ll take that time off. They’ve accommodated my schedule enough over the years. It’s time for me to accommodate theirs.”

Nicklas Backstrom drops appeal in Sochi Olympic doping case

Nicklas Backstrom drops appeal in Sochi Olympic doping case
LONDON (AP) -- Nearly a year later, Swedish hockey star Nicklas Backstrom reached a settlement Thursday in his fight against the positive drug test that kept him out of the Olympic final in Sochi.
The Washington Capitals center dropped his appeal against the International Olympic Committee ruling that he committed a doping violation. In return, he was issued with the minimum sanction of a reprimand and cleared of any intention to cheat.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, announced the settlement was reached ''after constructive discussions'' between Backstrom's lawyers and the IOC, World Anti-Doping Agency, and International Ice Hockey Federation.
''Mr. Backstrom, WADA, the IOC and the IIHF are pleased that this matter has now been concluded and wish to clarify that at no time was Mr. Backstrom's receipt of his Olympic silver medal at issue in the proceedings,'' CAS said.
Backstrom tested positive for pseudoephedrine after Sweden's win over Slovenia in the Olympic quarterfinals on Feb. 19, 2014. He said the stimulant was contained in a sinus medication he had been taking for allergies.
An IOC disciplinary panel in Sochi ruled that Backstrom committed a doping violation. He was suspended and pulled from the Swedish team just hours before the Feb. 23 gold-medal game, which Sweden lost 3-0 to Canada.

LeBron, Carmelo, Kobe, Durant and D-Wade are on losing teams; now what?

LBJCA11515top.jpg
It’s a team sport, this basketball. If feels as if the entirety of my sportswriting career has been spent reminding people there are five to a side, and while certain basketball players have the ability to tip the win/loss scales in either direction, disproportionate blame or credit shouldn’t be placed on the shoulders of just one lone player.
Those are three of the most coveted free agents in NBA history, the league’s reigning MVP and next big white whale on the free-agent market, and one of the greatest players of a generation of great players (also the league’s highest-paid player). All losing records. Currently, at least.
As the season hits it literal midpoint this week, it’s probably best to see where all of these cats are headed, with three months and 40-odd games left to get it right.LeBron’s Cavs will take on a pitiful Los Angeles Lakers club on Thursday night, in a nationally televised performance that will allow just about everyone present to give their take as to why the Cavs have started the season 19-20, and give the Cavaliers a chance to make a statement with a blowout win over an overmatched opponent. LeBron returned to action after a fortnight off to preside over a dumpster fire in a loss against the Suns on Tuesday. He looked as healthy as ever offensively but still seems lacking when it comes to warming to the role as the Cavs’ last-chance diner of a defender.

San Diego's Petco Park to host baseball's 2016 All-Star game

San Diego's Petco Park to host baseball's 2016 All-Star game
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- San Diego's Petco Park will host baseball's All-Star game in 2016, marking the second straight year the game will be played at a National League site.
This summer's game will be played in Cincinnati on July 14. The same league hasn't hosted the game in consecutive years since 2006 at Pittsburgh's PNC Park and 2007 at San Francisco's AT&T Park.
''San Diego is a beautiful city,'' Bud Selig said Thursday after his final owners' meeting as baseball commissioner, ''and showcasing Petco Park will be a remarkable opportunity for the Padres franchise and all of Major League Baseball.''

Teemu Selanne jersey retirement to test Jets' patience

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Ducks legend Teemu Selanne set a few major, league records in his NHL career – NHL goals by a rookie, goals by a Finnish born player, and a boatload of Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks marks.
He may set a new one Sunday, for the longest jersey retirement ceremony in NHL history.
We're supposed to be in our seats at 4:30 p.m. at Anaheim’s Honda Center for the start of the celebration. Sunday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets is supposed to start at 6 p.m. That’s a lot of Teemu. It could rival Mark Messier’s absurdly long New York Rangers grandiose, over-the-top opus in 2006. This YouTube lists his 2006 moment as an hour and 15 minutes and 47 seconds. Watch at your own risk.

Roy Tarpley, drug-plagued former Mavericks center, dies

Roy Tarpley, drug-plagued former Mavericks center, dies
DALLAS (AP) -- Roy Tarpley, the former Dallas Mavericks star center whose NBA career was cut short by drug abuse, died Friday. He was 50.
According to a Tarrant County medical examiner's report, Tarpley died at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, near Dallas. No cause of death was given in the online report.
''If Roy had stayed healthy, he could have been one of the top-50 players ever,'' Brad Davis, the Mavericks' radio analyst and player-development coach who played with Tarpley, told The Dallas Morning News. ''He could do it all - shoot, score, rebound, pass and defend. We're all sorry to hear of his passing.''

Adam Jones loses NFL bet, will donate $5K to David Ortiz's charity

JonesOrtiz1
Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox extended their AL East rivalry to the gridiron on Saturday. Not literally, of course, though that would definitely be a story in its own regard, but rather in the form of a friendly bet which centered around the Baltimore Ravens-New England Patriots playoff game.
It shouldn't be difficult to figure out who was rooting for whom. As is often the case in cities with multiple professional sports franchises, both men stuck by and supported the teams they share fans and real estate with, which means Jones was all-in on the Ravens, while Ortiz backed the Patriots.
As for the bet itself, it all started out just like any sports bet among friends.

Tiger Woods to return to the Waste Management Phoenix Open

Tiger Woods hasn't played in the Waste Management Phoenix Open since 2001. According to a Golf.com report, that drought will end later in January.
The publication cites two anonymous sources saying Woods is a lock to return to the event after a 13-year absence. The tournament starts January 29 and is played this year over Super Bowl weekend, with the added bonus of University of Phoenix Stadium hosting the NFL's championship game in the Phoenix-metro area. One of the most highly attended events on the PGA Tour, the Waste Management Phoenix Open is played at TPC Scottsdale, which was recently renovated by original architect Tom Weiskopf.
The report cites a tournament official who says Woods has already reserved a courtesy car for the event, as well another source claiming Woods has already booked a hotel room at the nearby Four Seasons Resort.
Woods doesn't have to make a commitment to play official before January 23, the Friday before tournament week. He typically doesn't announce his entry until that deadline. If Woods does play in Phoenix, it'll be his season debut, followed by his typical start at the Farmers Insurance Open the following week at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
The 14-time major winner has made three previous Phoenix starts, finishing T-18 in 1997, third in 1999 and fifth in 2001. In 1997, Woods made a hole-in-one on the layout's 16th hole, a par 3 whose single-day attendance typically outdraws the entire, whole-course gallery for a single day at other PGA Tour events. The ace lead to Woods' roof-raising celebration that was an early highlight of his career.

Cavs acquire J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert in multi-team trade

NBA: Miami Heat at New York Knicks
The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired New York Knicks guards J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert in a multi-team trade that also sends guard Dion Waiters to the Oklahoma City Thunder, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Oklahoma City gives the Cavaliers a protected future first-round draft pick and sends guard Lance Thomas to the Knicks, league sources said. As part of the trade, the Cavaliers sent rookie center Alex Kirk, forward Lou Amundson and a 2019 second-round pick to the Knicks, sources said.
The Thunder's pick to Cleveland is protected through No. 18 in 2015 and through No. 15 in 2016 and '17. Beyond that, it becomes two second-round picks.
For New York, the deal is a salary dump to clear cap space. The Knicks unload the $6.4 million owed to Smith next season, giving them approximately $28 million in salary-cap space this summer.
In the Cavaliers' search for a rim protector, they continue to pursue center Timofy Mozgov, but Denver remains reluctant to deal him, league sources told Yahoo.
The trade was finalized late Monday after the Cavaliers' and Knicks' games.
The Knicks also will waive center Samuel Dalembert, a league source said. His contract would've become fully guaranteed for the season if he remained on the roster through Wednesday.

Baseball Hall of Fame voters elect four: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, Craig Biggio

(Getty Images)
Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio have reached baseball immortality. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in July, after the Baseball Writers Association of America announced Tuesday that the four of them earned the necessary votes for Cooperstown.
This is the third time in history that the BBWAA has elected four players. The others were 1947 and 1955. Had one more player reached the 75-percent threshold, it would have been the largest BBWAA class since 1936, when the first Hall of Fame vote enshrined Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson.
Johnson and Martinez, two dominant pitchers on the ballot for the first time, were elected easily, earning 97.3 percent of the vote and 91.1 percent, respectively. Smoltz, another first timer who was dominant as both a starting pitcher and a closer, received 82.9 percent. This was Biggio's third time on the ballot. He missed Cooperstown by two votes in 2014, but earned 82.7 percent of the vote this time, thanks in large part of those 3,000 hits he compiled.
Mike Piazza was believed to have a shot to make it this year, but he finished with 69.9 percent. Of the remaining players on the ballot this time, the next closest to reaching the magic 75-percent threshold were: Jeff Bagwell (55.7), Tim Raines (55) and Curt Schilling (39.2). See the entire rundown of results at the BBWAA website.

Sabres' Zemgus Girgensons, five Blackhawks named NHL All-Star Game 'first six'

AP Photo/Gary Wiepert
The population of Latvia is about 1,997,500, according to a recent report. It’s a pretty safe bet, seeing the final numbers, that a good number voted for countryman Zemgus Girgensons of the Buffalo Sabres to start in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game.
On Saturday, the NHL announced the first six All-Stars for the game in Columbus later this month. Joining Girgensons will be a slew of Chicago Blackhawks. In one net will be Corey Crawford (1,099,504 votes), while Duncan Keith (1,198,173) and Brent Seabrook (1,016,992) will be on defense. Meanwhile, Patrick Kane (1,232,201) and Jonathan Toews (1,217,210), along with the Buffalo Sabres forward, will be up front for one of the two teams.
Girgensons received a total of 1,574,896 votes. The total isn’t a surprise given the amount of voting in general that was done by fans.

Tim Irvin commits to Longhorns/Michael Irvin Nephew

Tim Irvin
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Tim Irvin, the nephew of former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin, announced Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that he will play at Texas.
He will be joined on the Longhorns by his friend, ESPN 300 tight end Devonaire Clarington, the No. 75 recruit in the country who picked Texas over Miami, Florida and LSU.
Tim Irvin, a defensive back, had a 35-yard punt return to set up the game's first points on a field goal by Georgia commit Rodrigo Blankenship and LSU commit Derrius Guice had two long touchdown receptions to help the West beat the East 39-36 Saturday.
Michael Irvin, who played collegiately at Miami, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
Irvin, who will enroll early on Jan. 12, decided on Texas over Auburn and Miami. He plans to play nickel and return kicks for the Longhorns.
"I figured it out this morning after talking to my parents when we were coming into the stadium," Irvin said. "Texas is going to be the right spot for me."
