Alex Rodriguez has important allies in fight with Yankees over bonus

So at least somebody is on Alex Rodriguez’s side.
The Major League Baseball Players Association would take up his case should the New York Yankees choose not to pay him a $6 million bonus he’s owed for tying Willie Mays for No. 4 on the all-time home run list, the New York Post reported.

The Yankees reportedly would argue that they won’t receive a marketing benefit if A-Rod hits six more homers and reaches 660 for his career because of Rodriguez’s association with performance-enhancing drugs, which led to his season-long suspension last year. The players association would disagree.

“The union would challenge any breach of contract with the union,” a source close to the MLBPA told the Post. “A player can’t be punished again for something he’s already been punished for.”

And Rodriguez apparently won’t be punished for how he sued the players association last year, claiming that the MLBPA wasn’t putting out sufficient efforts on his behalf when he was fighting the Biogenesis-related suspension.
